Geology Hike

Join the Deschutes Land Trust and Derek Loeb for a geology hike at Whychus Canyon Preserve. Marvel at the geologic history of this rimrock canyon and take in the views from two scenic overlooks as you make your way into the canyon to the banks of Whychus Creek. Learn about the forces of nature that formed the cliffs surrounding the creek and see how the Preserve is recovering from the 2025 Flat Fire while exploring juniper groves and native grasslands. Registration is required and opens 1 month prior to the event.

Hike Rating: This is a challenging 5-6 mile hike on Whychus Canyon Preserve hiking trails.

Route: This hike will start at the Whychus Canyon Preserve kiosk and follow trails down into the Whychus Creek canyon. Terrain will be uneven and steep at times.

Elevation gain/loss: This hike is challenging with 300′ of elevation gain/loss.
